The construction of stage one of Aquinas College in Tauranga was completed in time for the start of the new 2003 academic year for the school’s first intake of 350 pupils. This stage is part of the integrated campus plan designed for the school by Chow:Hill. The plan consists of a comprehensive site layout, including a site-wide landscape strategy.

Valued at $9.5 million, stage one was a guaranteed maximum price contract in conjunction with Mainzeal, with Chow:Hill acting as principal consultant, architect and interior designer. The company was novated to Mainzeal for the duration of the construction stage.

Stage one includes a new administration building and staffroom and offices, a reception area, library and chapel, general classrooms, a science building and a specialist teaching building. These have been arranged around a series of courtyards, linked by covered walkways. The result is small groups of various-sized interactive spaces that create a caring community feel in keeping with the school’s philosophy. It’s a concept that can be extended as the school grows towards its final role of 800 students.

Stage two of the project will include an auditorium and performing arts facilities, to be followed by additional classrooms and a gymnasium.
