The Bridgewater building is a four-storey, 4000 sqm commercial development on the banks of the Waikato River at the south end of Hamilton. Chow:Hill were engaged by the joint venture client as overall project architects, health planners and interior designers for the lower two floors. The building has been successfully leased, with level one and part of level two taken up by ophthalmology clinics, a theatre suite and support services. The other levels are occupied by commercial tenants and all upper floors have extensive external decks overlooking the river and city beyond.
The building's location, in particular, influenced the design, as did the clients' requirements for high-quality, maintenance-free materials. This led to the use of pre-finished aluminium panel cladding and coloured concrete blockwork base for the exterior. An expression of some structural engineering details were informed by the steel and buttresses of the nearby river bridge. The river metaphor was extended into the interior design through the use of blues, greens, greys and timber details.
