Manukau Institute of Technology¹s new School of Foundation Studies opened on July 21 in time for the second semester. The facility caters for a large number of primarily Maori and Polynesians, mainly in their 20s, who are returning to education after leaving school early, but lack the necessary study skills.

The $4m building, which closes the fourth side of MIT's central courtyard, is designed to exhibit a strong community and family feel. Interiors are themed after a pacific motif, creating a warm, relaxed and unthreatening environment. Efficiency of planning allowed the area of the building to be reduced, saving on cost without compromising the budget.

It nevertheless comprises seven classrooms, three computer labs with 20 workstations each, and tutorial and interview rooms, as well as reception and administration facilities. There are also offices for the 30 or so staff, while student lounges provide food preparation and relaxation areas along with computer facilities.
