NZIA Resene Local Award for Architecture 2005
Exceptional clarity of thinking and meticulous execution has produced a house with a high level of fit to its site. The forms and limited palette of materials sit well in the semi rural landscape with strong references to a Waikato veracular. Fundamental principles of energy efficient design have been incorporated to good effect without compromising the architectural aesthetics. Easy transitions to the various peripheral specific-use courtyards and to the comfortable interior spaces make this a wonderful home.

Project: Hill House

NZIA Resene Local Award for Architecture 2005
Shunning the traditional approach, this building recognizes that elderly deserve and appreciate innovative, stimulating architecture. Simple materials have been used to create a bold sculpted design solution to providing the resort with a social and recreational centerpiece where residents and visitors alike feel at ease. Good use of colour, furniture selection and artwork combine to engender a feeling of visiting your favourite club or café.

Project: Forest Lake Gardens, Pavilion

NZIA Resene Colour Award 2005 The colour concepts carried through the new Christchurch Women’s Hospital demonstrate a thoroughness, complexity and commitment unusual in such a large institutional building. Expanding on ideas developed in close liaison with the various user groups, each floor represents a different themed colour palette to express the purpose of the area. In addition to this, common colours are used to vertically connect the various levels. Externally the bright yellow of the east façade presents an urban beacon differentiating and highlighting the hospitals presence within its more muted built environment.

NZIA Resene Colour Award 2004
The powerful use of colour is an integral component of the success of this project. In conjunction with large-scale wall graphics, even dark, narrow corridors are places of drama and entertainment, challenging the mind. A great example of interior Design with a capital D!

Project: RadioWorks, Waikato

NZIA Resene Colour Award 2004
'Boarding House' conjures up negative images of the conservative and the institutional. The vibrant use of colour throughout the interior destroys any suggestion of the 'old school' with a warmth, friendliness, and excitement that is a celebration of the social environment created by the architecture.

Project: Waikato Diocesan School For Girls

NZIA Resene Local Award for Architecture 2004
A simple yet powerful theme is applied using pattern, form, colour, texture, and wit to create impact. The effect on the client's company culture in relocating to this new environment has been to re-energise and excite staff in an industry that is all about creating energy and excitement for listeners! Ultimately architecture is about people, not buildings, and the architecture of this building really gets the people going!

Project: RadioWorks, Waikato

NZIA Resene Local Award for Architecture 2004
A case study in the art of doubling the size of an existing chapel while retaining the history, character, and entrance of the existing building. Creating a new diagonal axis and exploding one side of the chapel is a clever solution to a difficult problem, and worthy of recognition in itself. Yet it is the resultant sculptural ceiling, with its volume, drama, quality of light and acoustic performance that lifts this project into the realms of the sublime.

Project: Waikato Diocesan School For Girls Chapel

NZIA Resene Local Award for Architecture 2004
A tired and dated office is given a refreshing make-over that demonstrates the benefits of 'keeping it simple'. Eliminating clutter, opening spaces up with glass walls, and using colour to clearly define areas is all in takes to create a modern, professional and very effective working environment.

The 'Wintec Strategic Planning Report 2003' prepared by Chow:Hill Architects Ltd in association with Klu'Dup addresses the intergration of the Wintec tertiary education facility with the city of Hamilton. In doing so it takes a strategic approach and promotes sustainable outcomes.

This report demonstrates a true integration of the profession of planning, urban design and architecture and shows the way for the future of 'planning', in its wider sense. Chow:Hill Architects and Klu'Dup are worthy recipients of the Nancy Northcroft Planning Practice Award and are congratulated by the NZPI® Awards Committee.
