Chow:Hill’s sustainable design ethos for Braemar saw the private Waikato surgical hospital become the first of its kind designed and built on triple bottom line sustainable principles.
Braemar Hospital is one of the best-equipped private surgical hospitals in the country. The 7,200 m² building’s surgical and medical facilities include eight operating theatres, a 65-bed general ward, a five-bed intensive care unit, over 40-bed day surgery ward, and oncology facilities.
Chow:Hill’s design intent for the hospital was to forgo the traditional hospital surrounds and instead create an environment more akin to a restful hotel, with a healing ambience.
Given the site’s location on a busy intersection, Chow:Hill gave careful consideration to the acoustic and geotechnical performance of this building. The result is one of New Zealand’s first green hospitals, meeting triple bottom line sustainable principles.
A key challenge of the design was determining an interior aesthetic that responded to the emotional needs of patients as well as their physical wellbeing. A vibrant interior palette, assisted by the choice of natural materials, colours and textures and combined with natural light, has created a soft and nurturing environment.
