An agile, attractive and inspiring holistic learning environment for students was the outcome of Chow:Hill’s campus vision strategy for Wintec.
In 2003, Chow:Hill’s master planning and urban design team was engaged to undertake a comprehensive and holistic review of Wintec’s City Campus in Hamilton. The vision and strategy of Wintec was to consolidate an integrated and robust campus development by adopting a highly innovative and multi-disciplinary approach to tertiary learning.
Embarking on extensive consultation, the Chow:Hill team reviewed the tertiary institute’s values and future aspirations, while undertaking an environmental assessment, detailed review of operations and service delivery, an in-depth analysis of strategic planning and urban design considerations, and a robust business plan.
The outcome was a strategic campus redevelopment plan that delivered on an agile, attractive, and inspiring environment for students, with greater integration between the City Campus and CBD.
As Wintec’s portfolio of tertiary learning expanded, so too did the institute’s requirement for future campus planning. In 2011, the Chow:Hill team once again embarked on a strategic review of Wintec’s learning environments, this time encompassing the institute’s Rotokauri Campus, with the objective of creating a strong campus identity, clear connectivity and sense of place.
The resultant Rotokauri Master Plan brought together previously disparate student groups through positive campus planning and consolidation, and connected learning and social environments around a central campus heart.
The strategic plan also allowed for the integration of commercial development opportunities with the brownfield sites produced through extensive campus consolidation, and the concentration of campus assets and activity.
