Commemoration, remembrance and education were the three pillars around which Chow:Hill designed a place of reflection and learning for the RSA’s 90th anniversary.

Standing pride of place in the Manukau Memorial Gardens, Papatoetoe, is an award-winning space for public and personal remembrance, the RSA memorial to 30,108 New Zealand servicemen and servicewomen killed in armed conflict overseas, from the South African War to East Timor, and to honour those who served and returned, or continue to serve.

The landscape design includes three distinct areas: an open, paved commemoration space, focused on a flagpole, for dawn services and other public gatherings; a remembrance space enclosed by four sculpted granite-clad panels and four life-size bronze cast statues depicting army, naval, air and nursing services; and an education area in which four granite-clad panels convey, through text and imagery, personal stories of those who served.

Sustained research at Auckland War Memorial Museum/Tāmaki Paenga Hira ensured the authenticity of all the uniforms and memorabilia shown on the statues and panels while cultural icons, artefacts and carefully selected planting honour the cultural heritage of the site.

The RSA Memorial received a NZILA Pride of Place Bronze Award.
