In my work on most major health projects in NZ, I strive to find the ideal blend of building function, performance and design quality - real architecture that really works. As founding chair of the NZ Health Design Council, I am committed to supporting the development of health design knowledge, skill and experience in this country.
A fundamental question for me is, 'How does the place where you live allow you to be the person you want to be, and how does design enable or hinder this? My current research and project focus is on 'community living' - contributing to the design and development of thriving and sustainable communities through social and affordable housing, co-housing, and the continuum of private housing, integrating these with community facilities and infrastructure. As a Director I actively promote our strategic objectives, company identity and our sustainability agenda and am responsible for the publishing of our annual Company Sustainability Report.
This experience allied with a client-centred approach keeps me enthusiastic about innovative and smart ways to deliver successful projects for stakeholders. I have a particular skill in seeing opportunities to make projects happen, bringing the right people together and designing unique pathways to overcome apparently obstinate problems and achieve client goals.
My approach to design is based on the premise that teamwork, collaboration and transparency are key ingredients in delivering successful outcomes for our clients. I am a strong believer in effective leadership and being disciplined in the execution of the design process. This approach is founded on many years experience in the detailed design and execution of built projects.
The latter often relate to large institutional sites, such as with aged care. I focus on high quality design outcomes from urban scale to the design of buildings and landscape architecture. Since joining the Chow Hill healthcare team in the co-ordination of a large hospital project, I have continued with other projects in that sector, bringing excellent technical knowledge and skills. My passion is to document the creative process in a way that is easily understood by our clients and construction contractors.
Having over 15 years experience in architecture, services co-ordination and structural design, I’m primarily involved in large-scale hospital projects at present. This is where my team leadership and design management skills provide the greatest benefits for our clients. My background in records management, software integration and CAD systems enables our documentation teams to deliver high quality information to design and construction participants. My involvement creates enjoyable and effective project delivery for all.
My strengths are in concept design, design development, technical detailing, client communication and consultant coordination. I develop high quality visual representations of architectural concepts and preparation of presentation material to assist our clients in fully understanding the architectural outcomes of their projects.
During a volunteer trip to Indonesia I had the opportunity to help with the design and construction of a library and bridge, not only was this a great practical experience but also a way of being able to give back to the surrounding community.
With Chow:Hill for 3 years, I have been involved in both interior design and project support in a range of sectors; along with assisting the company with various commercial needs, particularly our website. I hold a Bachelor of Media Arts in Digital design and am passionate about creating digital imagery showcasing concept design enhanced by potential finishes. I enjoy assisting Project Architects and clients with workplace strategy, working to capture both the functional and aspirational goals of each project and applying sympathetic design outcomes.
My final project focused on compact residential design and high density living, proposing a complex of apartments to be developed within an existing Brownfield site, in Auckland City. Since joining Chow:Hill, I have worked on the Interior Design and documentation of a number of healthcare and aged care projects. I enjoy the challenge of creating functional, yet engaging interiors in which the user feels a sense of belonging and connection with their surroundings.

I also look for knowledge and skills for high-end technology in order to respond to BIM demand in the AEC industry.
A new member to the Chow hill team, coming with 10 years experience involving a range of projects including educational, commercial and residential design. Bringing to the table robust technical knowledge and design capabilities to deliver a wide variety of projects.
My final year project focused on Architectural Education and its distance between the profession. Breaking down the boundaries between the public, private and industry was a main focus. Creating a dialogue between the three sectors while establishing an exchange of ideas, knowledge and creativity. As we as Architects are creating spaces and places for people; particularly for people who may not know how architecture may affect them. Design is a bespoke response creating something incredible.

I bring to the Hamilton Studio of Chow:Hill a wealth of practical knowledge and 3D CAD skills across multi platforms which will help enhance the conceptual visual experience for our clients.
My final year Masters of Architecture research thesis investigated how a therapeutic space could be implemented in a post-disaster scenario in Central Java. In practice, I am currently involved in healthcare planning and design, working to find creative solutions that both support medical practice and enhance patient well being, to ultimately facilitate the process of healing. Regardless of the typology, I’m a believer that good design should be accessible by all; an architecture for the people.
Before this, study and other work experiences had me living in Auckland, Australia and the UK. My experience to date has immersed me in working through socially responsive design solutions, demanding thoughtful and functional creativity. While abroad I worked on multi-residential buildings and precincts, public transport facilities and also the education sector. I have had experience working and leading teams of different technical consultants and have also gained technical knowledge in a variety of differing climates. Specific individual client needs also brought me to gain experience in a variety of different construction procurement options.
While returning to work back in Hamilton and the greater region I value the opportunity to be involved in enhancing the local urban landscape with solutions of sustainable, socially responsible and creative architecture.
Working on a wide variety of projects including commercial, residential and educational, I strive to produce quality & extensive detailed design documents, resulting in positive project outcomes during the construction process, and to the benefit of our clients.

I love arts and drinking tea.
I am a registered, hands-on type of architect, with design and build experience in a vast array of building typologies, scales and construction methodologies, in many countries. I am passionate about creating inspirational, practical, flexible, vibrant and sustainable spaces, for all to optimise and enjoy for many lifetimes. Creativity, 'passive design', sustainability, durability, good aesthetics and a lot of practicality, should be a given to every project.
I am passionate about architecture and how considered and responsible design can enrich lives. Well-conceived design can help things run more fluidly, improve people's well-being, and make life more enjoyable. I encourage the pursuit of design excellence. It depends on more than the individual and it grows with collaboration that pushes thinking. Excellence is achieved by a continuous state of reinvention that is driven by the participants in the process. It is essential to our work. The early part of my career was involved with hospitality and institutional work in large practices. Private practice followed and I was primarily delivering bespoke residential work that required close working relationships with clients to assist them in realising their dreams. While this work was immensely satisfying my interests expanded and I grew a desire to bring my skills to a larger practices and work with teams to deliver

My love for imagery and design drives my passion for creating beautiful, purposeful buildings.
My background in hospitality and commercial retail design, and management, has allowed me to specialise in space planning, work place ergonomics, layouts and systems as well as people and change management. I bring a unique design thinking to each project to create the ultimate design solution for the brief, budget, market place, brand or purely client expectation.
My research for my final year thesis was in response to the Christchurch earthquake and how it has affected the outlying suburbs. The shortage of housing has put added strain onto residents and a sense of community was lost. My response was a medium density housing development which addressed the problems surrounding urban sprawl, community wellbeing, public versus private space and the separation of the pedestrian and vehicle. So far at Chow Hill I have learnt a vast majority of knowledge and hope to further my skill set in the upcoming projects, as well as adding value to the architecture team.
I am interested in how buildings shape the activities within our lives, and inversely how activities shape our buildings, the Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong is a fascinating example. Restricted only by the hard edges of the city surrounding it this largely ungoverned anarchic outgrowth became an almost direct expression of the multiplicity of human needs of the people which existed within its boundaries – an entangled network of spaces, supporting a wide variety of activities. The Kowloon Walled City is an inspiring case study in considering the restrictions of site and space. Following graduation I have worked in New Zealand and Australia on a range of projects including heritage buildings, seismic upgrades, motor trade buildings, a student accommodation, and town house developments. Other experiences include teaching English in Shanghai, China.
I joined Chow:Hill as an architectural graduate upon returning to New Zealand after several years living and travelling abroad.
Throughout my masters' of architecture (professional) degree at the University of Auckland I enriched my approach to imagining innovative and tangible spatial experiences in shaping the places and faces that make up our lived environment.
This creative penchant of mine has ultimately molded a polymath approach to design, facilitating provocative spaces on the intersection of architecture and various disciplines, leveraging story-telling, fabrication, interactive and graphic design.
With substantial work experience in the fields of digital fabrication, graphic design, cutting-edge interactive technology and as a design & media tutor in university, I am interested in the trans-disciplinary role architects are to play in this world of social, political and technological flux.
I have 15+ years design experience in a variety of landscape projects that include the public open space and the streetscape, housing developments, educational facilities, environmental rehabilitation and award winning commercial design.
The diversity of experience I have garnered over the last thirty years, collaborating across the multiple disciplines has given me a unique set of skills capable of leading a project from creative concepts to construction completion, a prerequisite to successful relationships and landscape completion.
I work closely with clients to achieve the successful realisation of their projects. Over the last 25+ years I have been involved with a wide range of architectural projects large and small both in New Zealand & Australia. Within the last 15 years I have specialised in projects related to the retirement industry. Some of these projects have received both Australasian and New Zealand industry and design awards. With considerable experience in the architectural profession I have an important mentoring role within Chow:Hill.
I have worked on numerous projects in the education and residential sectors as the lead architect. My experience has a broad range from the education sector to mixed commercial projects, refurbishments, and fit-outs.
I am passionate about architecture and delivering designs that are well thought out and are flexible to adapt to their future potential.

That has a lot to do with why I want every building I'm involved in to be the best it possibly can.
As an architect and planner, I make a conscious effort to evolve design solutions that are functional, innovative and sustainable for users. I strive to make the project journey, from concept to completion, enjoyable for clients and colleagues, which gives me professional satisfaction.

As an experienced architectural technician, my job is to focus on the detail and functional requirements in a building design. However, this does not restrict my passion for creative architecture. I believe every crazy idea put on paper can be achieved in built form but with persistence.
I have a Bachelor of Architectural Studies and a Diploma in Architectural Technology, and currently pursuing Master of Architecture (Professional) part time at Unitec Institute of Technology. I am committed to progress and this has always been a drive for me in everything I do.
My research for my final year of thesis was in response to the needs of a community and its environment, socially, culturally and physically. This project develops an architectural intervention that aims to capture the value of urban green spaces as assets for creating a liveable neighbourhood, which will also become a catalyst for the revitalisation of the area by reconnecting people to the natural landscapes of their community. This is achieved by creating a community-orientated architecture to support local and regional transport and to connect local and civic spaces. Good architecture is about understanding and responding to the needs of people and, the environment which is my greatest strength.
Previously, as managing director I ensured Chow:Hill constantly focussed on the future, and effective succession planning was always a key consideration and as chairman, I encouraged the sharing of accumulated wisdom as part of the personal and professional development and mentoring programme for the company’s new leaders.
My role as a Design Consultant is project-focused with special emphasis given to developing project strategies in support of client’s commercial objectives.
I have been involved in a wide range of landscape projects including residential, commercial, subdivision and school design. From my perspective, professional skills, creative thoughts and close cooperation within a multi-disciplinary team which includes clients, Urban Planners, Architects and Engineers, are all essential for projects to succeed. I am passionate about creating attractive, inspirational and sustainable spaces for people to use. I am also quite interested in exploring how Landscape Architectural strategies can be used to respond to a range of different problems caused by rapid urbanization in a sustainable and innovative way.
Also with a qualification in Interior Design, I have an ability to bring design flair as well as technical knowledge to the Chow:Hill team.
With experience in various customer focused roles and a Bachelor of Business with majors in marketing and retail, I am the face you are most likely to see when you walk in the door at our Hamilton studio.
Propelled by the idea of reviving the image of hospitals in society, and suturing the severed physical and social connections to the city, my thesis project explored architecture's role in achieving these aspirations in health care design.
Hospitals are a legacy of humanity's deepest compassion. They embody our society's values and culture. I strive to bring my academic research and my experience in aged care to the planning and design of our health care projects with the aim of achieving a more architecturally expressive and empowering image of healthcare.
With over ten years of international experience in South Africa; I then moved to New Zealand to settle and raise my family. Upskilling with the latest changes in industry technology, I returned to my passion in Architecture in 2013. Over the years, I have enjoyed working on projects across all sectors and collaborating with our team to make each project a success.
After completing three years in residential design, following my Bachelor of Architectural Studies in Christchurch, I joined the practice to bring my experience into the commercial realm. My experience gives me a wide understanding of the design, detailing, and construction of projects. I am passionate about creating liveable spaces that improve and enrich the lives of the users.
I joined Chow:Hill in 2007 and my work here has centered mainly on health and aged-care projects. This represents a change in direction for me as I had beforehand mainly worked on residential projects. I have been involved in a variety of projects phases ranging from early consent stages, through construction to project administration. I gain particular satisfaction when after a great team effort our project finally comes to life.
My passion lies in making positive impacts on different phases of the project delivery process: concept design, developed design, detail documentation, coordination with clients, consultants and contractors, contact administration and site observation. In addition to the competence and skills gained from work, my personal experiences in humanitarian aid and associated research have also given me a deep understanding of the importance of architecture and its role in society.
My experience ranges from residential to commercial projects, and with an eye for detail I apply my construction knowledge to deliver the highest standard to every project. I believe as architectural professionals we have the ability and responsibility to shape and improve the communities we are involved in. It is because of this greater context than I have developed a passion for good design and detailing. At Chow:Hill we work hard towards adding value to all projects, while at the same time putting our client's needs first.

Hospitals are a legacy of humanity's deepest compassion. They embody our society's values and culture. I strive to bring my academic research and my experience in aged care to the planning and design of our health care projects with the aim of achieving a more architecturally expressive and empowering image of healthcare.
