The Chow:Hill design team relished the challenge of transforming an industrial warehouse into a central city childcare centre with nature at its core.

When Hamilton’s Curious Cubs Early Learning Centre secured an inner city concrete warehouse for new premises, Chow:Hill collaborated on a design that reflected the centre’s nature-driven approach to childcare.

The challenge was to transform the three-bay industrial building in a way that met the aesthetic requirements of the design while delivering on functional and human-centred performance, as well as safety. Significant seismic upgrades preceded a new front façade of recycled brick and cedar. Existing steel entranceway pillars were pushed back to provide cover and clad in timber to soften the building’s exterior and align with the centre’s overall natural aesthetic, while an entire bay was converted into a multi-purpose outdoor play area.

A new Coloursteel® roof, insulation and double glazing ensured the centre met all Ministry of Education specifications, while the airy indoor layout delivered on the space requirements for children’s play and learning, and a staff administrative area.

The natural feel of the centre’s interior was achieved through the featured black ceiling panels contrasting with timber-look vinyl flooring, wooden doors and furniture.
