"A welcoming knowledge hub that speaks of Tairawhiti"

The H.B. Williams Memorial Library Extension involved the renovation and extension of the original 1960's modernist H.B. Williams Memorial Library to create a contemporary library and community learning hub with approximately 1000m2 of flexible multiple use space added to the existing building.

Careful review and exploration of the role of a modern library in the Gisborne context led to the development of open and vibrant spaces and functional flexibility to allow the facility to welcome community groups and after-hours events enhancing its place in the community and sustainability long term.

Project focus points include connecting with the urban community through recognition of context and place working closely with local artists through the project to weave together cultural narratives of learning, local history, and maanakitanga -a facility that is welcoming is all. The completed project was officially opened in April 2018.
