Chow:Hill’s design for the new stand-alone unit that replaced a cramped renal dialysis facility within the Nelson Hospital campus has efficiency, sustainability, staff and patient well-being at its core.

Designed to harmonise with the adjacent Community Oral Health facility, the new 800m2 building features a complementary palette of materials, colours, and roof form.

Shadowclad cladding covers the timber structure while the clerestory roof of profiled metal roofing provides space for plant above the ceiling and maximises the area available for photo-voltaic solar panels. The emphasis on sustainability is also reflected in the careful placement of windows to minimise glass areas and maximise insulation.

The challenges posed by a steeply sloping site – and the need to provide ample car parking, especially for patients travelling long distances three times a week - were met by creating a basement parking area that also accommodates rainwater storage tanks.

The eight-chair haemodialysis unit at present occupies 400m2 of the building, with a further 400m2of shell space being provided for future fit-out for other uses. With the Nelson facility being one of only three in the South Island, the purpose-built new premises, are a boon for patients and staff alike.
