WAIKATO// BOP 2014 NZIA LOCAL AWARD FOR SMALL PROJECT ARCHITECTURE

The Waikato rolling countryside is replete with barns and implement sheds with a mix of board and batten cladding and corrugated steel. It is common on summer evenings to see tractor headlights and floodlights from within barns as farmers make the most of the dry to bring in and stack hay before the dew of the morning. This caught our imagination!

Essentially then, a workshop with simple living quarters on the upper level, the design pays homage to a traditional Waikato barn vernacular, but with a contemporary adaptation. At night the barn glows, dramatically revealing the large glazed openings behind the battens and screens within the traditional barn form. Rainwater collection, grey water reuse options, onsite sewage treatment, passive ventilation, low-emission log burner, solar hot water panels and photovoltaic cells for power generation all combine to create a design that has near- zero running costs.
