A masterplan to ensure staged development of Starship Hospital’s emergency department began with the redesign of the unit’s entranceway to improve patient safety and enhance child and family experience.

Creating an inviting and interactive patient waiting area in Starship Hospital’s Children’s Emergency Department, while ensuring patient safety was at the fore, framed the design methodology for Chow:Hill’s redesign of this new world-class children’s ED unit.

Applying healthcare design principles to meet the unit’s increasing acute volumes and future-proof for expansion, the Chow:Hill team collaborated with stakeholders to achieve the conceptual requirements required to shape the unit’s reception and triage, making it easily identifiable by incoming patients, yet functionally efficient for staff.

The unit’s interior configuration has expanded the working environment to support staff and equipment and aid efficiency. Visual access allows young patients to be monitored and assessed at all times, producing an atmosphere of safety and enhancing the child and family experience in high-stress situations.

Additional elements incorporated into Chow:Hill’s design reflect the emphasis placed on patientcare and wellbeing: bench seating creates physical connection between families, interactive screens ensure engagement with patient and staff, an alcove room provides a calming restful space and strategically placed wayfinding has enhanced the overall transparency of movement throughout this world-class healthcare facility.

Collaboration on Starship Hospital’s Children’s ED Unit was undertaken with Simon James and Rush Digital.
