Industrial redevelopment projects are often judged by the finished building. For CAL Trucks, success was measured differently. The challenge was not only to deliver new facilities, but to do so while maintaining business continuity across active service, fabrication, parts and customer operations
Over the past several years, Chow:Hill has partnered with CAL Trucks on a staged redevelopment programme across both Hamilton and Auckland, supporting the company’s long-term growth, operational efficiency and site consolidation objectives.
The Hamilton redevelopment began with the replacement of CAL Trucks’ existing service workshop within a live operational environment. Careful planning and staging were required to ensure surrounding fabrication, administration, and parts operations could continue uninterrupted throughout construction.
Designed specifically for heavy vehicle servicing, the new workshop includes six service pits, VTNZ Certificate of Fitness inspection lanes, a full-length gantry crane system, and integrated oil and lubrication reticulation.
The primary challenge was delivering a major redevelopment within a live operational environment. Maintaining safe access and carefully sequencing construction around day-to-day business requirements were critical to project success. The completed workshop enables the consolidation of servicing operations previously spread across multiple locations, improving efficiency and supporting future growth.
Consolidating Operations
Running in parallel with the Hamilton programme is the redevelopment of CAL Trucks’ East Tamaki operation. The project includes a new heavy vehicle workshop, service pits, skylifts and hoists, customer reception and staff amenities.
Additionally, an existing industrial building is being remodelled to accommodate sales, parts, fabrication, and New Truck Preparation functions.
Once complete, the new development consolidates multiple operations into
an integrated site, improving efficiency, collaboration and flexibility for future growth.
A Staged Approach to Growth
Following completion of the workshop redevelopment, the next stage of the Hamilton masterplan focused on expanding operational capability.
A new 1,400sqm industrial facility was developed to accommodate New Truck Preparation (NTP) activities and provide additional parts storage capacity, allowing CAL Trucks to continue growing its operations while minimising disruption.
The current phase includes a new service and parts reception, upgraded customer facilities, enhanced sales environment, and expanded staff amenities. These improvements have been delivered through a carefully managed decanting strategy and staged relocation of operational functions, enabling the business to continue operating while facilities are progressively upgraded.
Supporting Business Transformation
Across Hamilton and Auckland, the redevelopment programme has focused on consolidating operations, improving efficiency, and creating facilities that support staff, customers and long-term business growth.
Through strategic planning, staged delivery, and a strong understanding of industrial operations, Chow:Hill has supported CAL Trucks through a complex multi-site transformation while maintaining business continuity.
The result is a series of facilities designed to support both current operations and future growth.
