This was needed by the proposed replacement of the linear accelerator (Linac) machines, which provide more precise and efficient cancer treatment, reducing damage to healthy tissue and supporting faster recovery. The brief for MV2 and MV3 required locating the linear accelerator plant out of patient view, as well as improving the existing console areas.
Chris Thom worked with Health New Zealand Auckland staff, consultants and equipment suppliers to develop concept and preliminary design for this project. This required careful consideration of the methodology for machine removal and replacement. Anner Chong was Project Architect for both from Developed Design to construction and commissioning. As a result of the successful completion of this work, Chow:Hill were then engaged as architects, health planners and interior designers for the Auckland Radiation Oncology Portfolio. This consisted of the refurbishment of a further four bunkers (MV1, MV4, MV5 and MV6) and a simulation CT room (CT2), as well as the construction of a new brachytherapy unit. For this, Anner Chong has been Project Director and Chris Thom Project Architect, supported by Saw Khaing.
MV4, MV5 and CT2 are complete and operational, and construction has commenced in 2025 on MV1 and Brachytherapy. Our involvement has included the upgrading of surrounding staff and patient facilities, and incorporation of the developing cultural narrative for the facility. Amy Land has assisted with interior design throughout.
